Dead Letter Drop — A Safer Way to Share Contact Details

Posted by Spacened in Dead Letter Drop via Web

The idea for **Dead Letter Drop** was born from a simple, everyday problem: how to exchange contact details safely and privately without giving away your phone number or social media accounts.

Imagine meeting someone new at an event or gathering. You’d like to stay in touch, but you’re not ready to hand over personal contact information just yet. That’s where Dead Letter Drop comes in.

Originally inspired by the classic spy trick of leaving secret messages in hidden places — the “dead letter drop” — this digital version offers a modern, privacy-focused twist.

Here’s how it works:
When you open the Dead Letter Drop page, your browser automatically generates a **cryptographic keypair** — one public key and one private key — right on your device. No registration, no password, and nothing is sent to the server.

You’ll then get a **QR code** linked to your public key. You can screenshot or share this QR code with anyone who wants to send you a message.

When they scan it, they’re taken to a secure webpage where they can write a private message to you. The message is encrypted using your public key, meaning **only your browser** can decrypt it. Even the server can’t read what’s inside.

A few days later, you can return to your personal inbox page and check if you’ve received any messages. Your browser decrypts them automatically, keeping everything fully private and under your control.

To maintain privacy and prevent data buildup, all messages are automatically deleted from the server after seven days — whether you read them or not.
